Mood Shifters and Disruptors
Newsletter - May 2024
We’re testing out a new newsletter platform! Let us know what you think in the comments.
Dear friends,
Welcome to the new Slack Global Consulting (SGC) newsletter – Spring Edition! As we embrace the changing of seasons, SGC is also in a phase of renewal, emergence and growth. Before we delve into our latest updates, we’ve been thinking about laughter as a mood shifter and disruptor.
When’s the last time you laughed? I mean one of those deep belly laughs, the kind that makes you cry? Or maybe even feels a little bit painful, but also really good at the same time? Yup, that kind of laugh.
Everywhere, it seems, is another reason to be angry, sad or both. Yet, I’ve been asking myself about the importance of laughter. Perhaps despite, or because, the world seems to be hemorrhaging with an overflow of oppression, trauma, death and grief - laughter feels like a necessity.

In 2023, we celebrated 10+ years!
Thank you for partnering with us.

We are excited to welcome new team members Tianna Spears to support BTV and Morgane Garnier, who held it down in 2023 and is now supporting with all things scheduling and administrative. | After a yearlong sabbatical, Jessica Rey has returned as our Project Facilitator. Lastly, long-term team member Iyanuoluwa Adeniji started law school at UC Davis last fall. Congrats Iyanu! |
Earlier this year we grounded in our values, focused on the present and re-committed to creating a space for women of color leaders to reflect and share their leadership journeys with each other and the world.
In 2017, Behind the Veil: Women, Race, and Leadership in the Social Justice Sector (BTV) started as a whisper of an idea to uplift and celebrate the paths - rooted in race and gender - that women of color leaders, specifically founders, forge and create. What does it take to “make a way out of no way?” How do we go behind the veil to discover, then celebrate what and how we do it? BTV is first a partnership, a collective, and a union of voices that form a book of essays, a project and a writing process of uncovering and going deep.

Behind the Veil (BTV) is a 501(c)3 project connecting women of color leaders and changemakers who are transforming their worlds with culturally informed leadership practices and a vision for social, racial, and economic equity and justice. BTV engages and supports women executive directors, CEOs, founders, and leaders of nonprofits and philanthropic entities to reflect on and celebrate their leadership journeys and learnings.
2023 was a big year for BTV
We hosted several virtual writing sessions and enjoyed an in-person Writing Retreat in Big Bear, CA.
BTV received an anonymous donation of $5,000 and our first $25,000 grant.
BTV is incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from our community!
This year, we are inviting women of color leaders who are ready to reflect on their leadership journey to participate in our upcoming BTV Virtual Writing Sessions and join the BTV community. These sessions are designed for low facilitation, low-pressure, and self-guided writing for women of color leaders.
If you are interested in joining the BTV community and registering for the upcoming Virtual Writing Sessions, read more about the project and invitation to join here:
Please share this invitation with women of color leaders in your orbit who are aligned and may be interested in an emergent space like BTV. While there is currently no fee for participation, we invite our community to donate and contribute through grants and sponsorships.

Wellness Corner
A couple of our favorite wellness tools from ongoing work with our partners...
"When I let myself really feel the beauty and pain, they only magnify each other. Beauty makes loss that much more tragic, and tragedy makes love all the more powerful. The opportunity to keep stretching my awareness of this multiplicity is intensely humbling.” -tayla shanaye | ![]() Redesigned and revised version out now! |

Music Corner
Here’s what we’re listening to...
With your support, we look forward to growing BTV’s community of women of color leaders.
We invite you to send the BTV Community Invite Form to women of color in your networks who are interested in reflecting and writing about their leadership journeys.
Meanwhile, keep breathing, moving and aligning with your purpose!
In partnership,
Latonya, Jessica, Tianna and Morgane
