Roots, Branches, Blooms and Behind the Veil!
Newsletter - August 2024
We’re testing out a new newsletter platform! Let us know what you think in the comments.
Dear community,
We hope you all are enjoying some sun and making space for deep rest during the busy summer months! At Slack Global Consulting, we’re slowing down after some big events and reflecting on what it takes to build an authentic community.
In a world where we are encouraged to rush through transactional relationships, we restore ourselves by honoring the value of real connections. These are the roots of a true sense of belonging. We are excited to share a tool we use with our clients to facilitate getting to know each other better. Our hope is that you can use this to nurture connections within your team.
Instructions: As an individual or as a team, draw what has shaped you or your team into who you are today using the prompts below.
Roots are what you are made of (family, community, values)
Branches are what runs through your veins (the important areas of your life, formative experiences, how your energy works or feels, what animates you)
Blooms represent what’s blooming or what’s fruitful for you right now

Save The Date!
The annual BTV writing retreat is on Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend from October 11-14.
This retreat is a space for women of color (WOC) leaders to rest, reflect deeply and write. It is our offering to spend time away from the everyday and focus on your writing, specifically your leadership journey, in community. If you are part of the BTV community and would like to attend, please RSVP by emailing [email protected].
Behind the Veil hosts virtual and in-person gatherings for women of color leaders to write together and reflect on their leadership journeys. Our writing retreat spaces are invitation only and offer a low-pressure, low-facilitation, creative space for WOC to grow as storytellers, orators and writers.
Next in-person writing session: Saturday, September 21st from 9am-2pm PT

BTV engages and supports women executive directors, CEOs, founders and leaders of nonprofits and philanthropic entities to reflect on and celebrate their leadership journeys and learnings.

Jessica Rey (she/they) has partnered with Slack Global for over 8 years. They are a project facilitator, weaving care into the support, guidance and facilitation of programming and projects. They enjoy curating spaces to reflect, connect and strategize collaboratively. Jessica is passionate about cultivating and supporting social movements toward liberation. They believe in centering care, intentionality and collaboration, to move in alignment with the more natural non-dominating energies and rhythms of mutuality and the universe.
Latonya will be out of office on writing sabbatical for the month of August. Please contact [email protected] for scheduling and [email protected] for any other needs.

Recently, the California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) celebrated its 30th anniversary with a Family Reunion. Latonya, former Executive Director of the organization, shared some remarks alongside other legacy leaders of CABWHP.
“We’ve always known epigenetically or what the ancestors would call “in our bones” that what ails us is greater than just us. And we know that what saves us is also us, and only us. We are our best advocates, for ourselves and for others, like my grandmother, when we have agency and systems that support us."
